Light and Shade, a Poem

The sun looks itself in the mirror

As the day grows darker

Red cast upon the glass of the deep

Like a fire ravaging the caverns underneath

No rest, suffering and no sleep

Until Night.

On the shore

And memories of what is no more.

*

We travel, west of Eden

By a promise made with a smoking fire pot, and in the other

Hand; a smoking torch. we travel to eternity,

With hope and certainty, across the waters another shoreline,

Outside of time,

In the rolling fields illuminated with pure Light,

We will find shade,

And know peace.

*

“I love you,

and I miss you. ”

Notes:

This poem is written from my Christian perspective, so the allusions are theologically.

Eden refers a perfect place that the earth once was, (Genesis 3).

The firepot and smoking torch refers to the promise made to Abraham in Genesis 15. Where God alone took on the obligations of the covenant to Abraham, where God showed him that his descendants would go into slavery in Egypt, and, possibly, the fire pot was a symbol for the cloud by day, and the torch was a symbol for the fire by night that led the Israelites out of Egypt. (Check out the book of Exodus) He promised to bring them out of Egypt, and he did.

This has become symbolic of Christian salvation, because Jesus saves us from the crazy and messed up stuff that we had done. The slavery to the wrong doing we cannot stop doing. Jesus brings us out of this.

The pure Light is God, and the Shade is the Tree of Life. As Revelation 22:1-5 shows symbolically a little what heaven is like: “Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will serve him. They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever.”

This life is crazy, but everything will be alright.

I wrote this for my Grandma who passed on little over a year ago.
